WoW vs. AoC..Battle of the mmorpgs

Hey everyone,

Before you run off and delete my site from your bookmarks(which you’ve hopefully done by now =D) I am going to discuss an important topic in the mmorpg community. World of warcraft versus age of conan.

I honestly believe that these games are NOTHING a like. The only WoW killer I believe will be blizzard. Can they hold the attention of the player much longer? With games like Warhammer and AoC on the horizon and currently out; it can be tough for them. It looks like their latest expansion could be their last as they decide to work on other projects. I’ll discuss briefly what each games demographic player is on and some of the successes with each.

WoW

  1. Top selling MMORPG
  2. Ages ??-whatever(anyone can really play)
  3. Most popular time card EVER. Not only kids pick the card up. Adults who are paranoid about security do as well.
  4. Nearly any computer in the last 5 years can play this game easily. A much wider demographic in terms of sales for Blizzard
  5. Defined the current definition of “success” for an MMORPG
  6. Highly innovative(many easy quests, good UI, less grind, excellent raid encounters)
  7. New expansion pack coming out

AoC

  1. New Combat system
  2. PvP focused
  3. Easy quest system(faster than WoW)
  4. Aimed at 18+(not always the case though)
  5. Need quite a good machine to run.
  6. Not elves and orcs
  7. New game in general

These games are both great. Not one is better than the other honestly. Sure some might say “LOL WOW IS FOR KIDZ” and vice versa for Age of Conan. Those statements are highly opinionated. However we as MMORPG players should appreciate that there is a variety of choice for us. No matter what happens in the battle of these MMORPG’s the real winners are the players themselves.

Thanks for reading my age of conan blog everyone. I’ll be posting more progress pictures later on. Stay tuned!

I highly agree with your points. Now that I look back @ WoW I can’t hate it. Honestly you can’t spend playing for 20 days (more then other games I ever played) and say it was shit lol. Even playing Conan for a short while I noticed the big differences from WoW. The combat system is really innovative; a lot better the traditional point and click. Finally there are no Orcs or elves, but being a fantasy lover I do miss them. People seem to be really excited for the expansion pack for WoW, they seem to dig the flying mobs, and separate instances for 10, 25, and 50 people raids and of course the Lich king himself. They also are implementing siege warfare in PvP. Blizzard is trying to extend the life of WoW, but with Conan out and Warhammer coming soon they going to have a run for their money! But, it’s also hard to compete against a strong WoW community. Conan’s PvP system, sort of resembles DOAC don’t you think?

  2. Few things that need to be improved:

-) Option to show your party member on the map
-) Chatting system is very unintuitive, need some tweaking
-) Better tooltips/description on the talents/feats/skills, some of them are extremely vague

  3. Azure: Yea agreed. They need to fix their UI. I didn’t even notice there were instances until level 32 haha.

  4. Ye, I agree with AceSeven7. I played WoW as well as many other MMOs, and I can’t have a wrong word about WoW even now, that AoC is out. It’s almost like a legend..

I’m happy that other stlyes aer present in the market now, becouse competiton makes better games.. IF Blizz sees that other MMOs can catch thousends / tens or hundreds thousands of people, they’ll also see, that they need contionous improvement to remain the best.. (But I don’t wanna invent the wheel once again, Blizz surely saw this coming too.. I expext them to see this..
